Workshop summary
Expectations of research student and supervisor in regard to supervision and research constitute an important issue concerning effective postgraduate supervision. Establishing reasonable, agreed expectations early on in the student’s candidature could make a significant contribution leading to successful completion of a postgraduate study. This one hour interactive workshop is designed to cater for all RHD students and academic staff in the faculty (both experienced and unexperienced) for developing their skills of negotiating the mutual expectations between RHD students and supervisors. It will present both practical tools ready to use, and theoretical perspectives for interested participants to explore further. The workshop will cover issues of:
- the students view – what student commonly expect of their supervisors
- the supervisors view – what supervisor commonly expect of their students
- useful ways of opening up discussion of expectations
